At Black Mesa Kennels, we teach using positive reinforcement and marker training. Training is the development of a shared language. Most of us cannot speak “dog”, and dogs don’t naturally understand “human,” so training is the bridge between the two. My Polite Dog Training teaches you to teach your dog.

Positive-reinforcement training has many advantages: it is fun for your dog, which makes it fun for you, which makes you both want to do it more; it is force-free and it helps your dog want to learn. The more you work with your dog, the better behaved your dog will become. And the best part is that it lets your dog know that learning is a safe, rewarding experience.

Fun fact: did you know that 15 to 20 minutes of mental stimulation is the equivalent of an hour of physical exercise? Stimulating a dog’s mind through training is one way to tire them out. Of course, they still need physical activity, but a tired dog is a happy owner!

Foundational Basic Manners Training

How would you like your dog to know how to behave in your home, around you, your family and friends? Do you want to be able to take your dog places, and know he/she will behave appropriately and politely?

Learning is an ongoing endeavor for both you and your dog. With patience, consistency, and lots and lots of positive reinforcement, you can have the dog that really is your best friend.

We will teach you to teach your dog how to behave in real life situations, starting with the basics, including how to walk politely on a leash, sit when greeting visitors and coming when called. It’s never too early (or late) to start!
